University of East Anglia(东英吉利大学)entry requirements for Chinese students — minimum average mark, university list tiers and programme extras
东英吉利大学(University of East Anglia, UEA)sets its 2024 taught-master's entry bar for Chinese bachelor's holders through two university tiers and a weighted-average threshold tied to the UK degree class you are targeting. For a 2:1 offer you need a 65% weighted average from a 211/985 or 2013 Netbig Top 300 institution, or 70% from any other institution; a 2:2 offer drops those to 60% and 65%.
Minimum average mark by degree class and institution tier
UEA converts UK degree classes into Chinese weighted-average marks as follows:
| Institution tier | 2:1 requirement | 2:2 requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 211/985 universities, or institutions in the 2013 Netbig (网大) ranking Top 300 | 65% | 60% |
| Other institutions — including non-211/985, affiliated colleges, independent colleges and university branch campuses | 70% | 65% |
These are minimum weighted averages. The course you apply to still decides whether it asks for a 2:1 or a 2:2.
How the two university tiers work
UEA splits Chinese institutions into two groups. The first covers 211 and 985 universities and any institution that appeared in the 2013 Netbig ranking's Top 300. The second covers everything else — non-211/985 public universities, affiliated colleges, independent colleges and branch campuses of universities.
UEA's material does not publish how many Chinese universities fall into each group, and it does not assign named universities to a tier beyond the category descriptions above. For the current list and any later changes, check the university's own pages, which take precedence.
Business School courses with relaxed background rules
For the 2024 intake, several UEA business taught-master's courses — three-term, taught, with no dissertation requirement — do not restrict your bachelor's background. UEA's admissions note lists these as 2:2-entry courses:
- Business Management
- Human Resource Management
- Finance and Management
- International Accounting and Financial Management (ACCA exemption for 6 papers)
- Investment and Finance Management (CFA & CISI certified)
- Marketing (CIM certified)
- Marketing and Management (CIM certified)
- International Business Management
This relaxation does not apply to every programme. Excluded courses named in the material include MSc International Masters in Applied Ecology, MA in Brand Leadership, MA Broadcast and Digital Journalism UK, and all programmes within the School of Health Sciences, the School of Medicine and other listed schools. If your target course is not on the business list above, check the university's own pages, which take precedence.
Film and media courses — background and portfolio changes
From autumn 2023, UEA widened access to three of its one-year taught film and media postgraduate courses. They now accept any social-science or humanities background, including business and economics, provided you meet the weighted-average requirement — and no portfolio or CV is needed.
Two of those courses were also moved from a 2:1 to a 2:2 entry standard: Media, Culture and Society (媒体文化与社会) and Film and Creative Practice (影视创意实践). The change applies to the 2024 intake onward; for the full course list and any conditions, check the university's own pages, which take precedence.
Reference letter waivers
Since 2023, UEA has removed the reference-letter requirement for most taught master's applications across a wide set of schools. The waiver covers all schools under the social sciences faculty — Business, Economics, Law, Education, International Development and Psychology among them — plus some humanities and arts schools (History; Art, Media and American Studies; Politics, Philosophy and Language Studies) and some science schools (Environmental Science; Computer Science).
UEA updated its master's application system so that programmes not needing a reference no longer prompt for it. Whether your specific course still asks for one is shown in the application system; where the material is silent, check the university's own pages, which take precedence.
Programme-specific extras to verify
A few courses carry professional-accreditation extras worth noting:
- International Accounting and Financial Management — ACCA exemption for 6 papers
- Investment and Finance Management — CFA and CISI certification
- Marketing and Marketing and Management — CIM certification
The material does not state GMAT, interview or portfolio requirements for the courses above beyond what is noted (film and media no longer need a portfolio or CV). For any course that may require a GMAT score, an interview or a portfolio, check the university's own pages, which take precedence — UEA's official site is the place to confirm each figure.
