University of Southampton(南安普顿大学)entry requirements for Chinese students (2026) — minimum average mark, university list tiers and programme extras

For the 2026 intake, University of Southampton(南安普顿大学)publishes country-specific entry requirements for China that sort Chinese institutions into tiers and attach a weighted-average mark to each UK degree class. Tier A universities want 75 average (GPA 3.25/4.0, 4.06/5.0) for a first-class-equivalent offer; Tier B wants 80 (3.5/4.0, 4.38/5.0); Tier D, which covers all other ECCTIS-recognised degree awarding institutions, wants 93 (3.9/4.0, 4.88/5.0). These are standard criteria, not guarantees.

The headline numbers by tier

Tier 1st equivalent 2:1 equivalent 2:2 equivalent
A 75 (3.25/4.0 · 4.06/5.0) 70 (2.8/4.0 · 3.5/5.0) 65 (2.3/4.0 · 2.88/5.0)
B 80 (3.5/4.0 · 4.38/5.0) 75 (3.1/4.0 · 3.88/5.0) 70 (2.6/4.0 · 3.25/5.0)
C Not stated in the material available to us — check the university's own pages, which take precedence
D 93 (3.9/4.0 · 4.88/5.0) 88 (3.7/4.0 · 4.63/5.0) 83 (3.5/4.0 · 4.38/5.0)

Read the two scales as one requirement: the percentage mark and the GPA are equivalent expressions of the same threshold. If your university reports both, the higher one is used. Core-course (key module) scores are looked at separately, so a strong overall average does not by itself settle an application.

How the tier list works

The tiers are defined by reference to published rankings and project membership, not by a public headcount:

We are not going to count how many universities fall into each tier, and we won't assign a named institution to a tier beyond the ones the material actually lists. The full institution-by-institution table is far longer than any summary can be: check the university’s own China entry requirements page, which takes precedence.

Joint and offshore arrangements are handled separately, on their own grading systems rather than the percentage scale above. Examples in the published table include the University of Nottingham Ningbo and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (UK grading), Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, which is listed at 4.65/5 and 4/5 (85%).

The near-miss policy and where it does not apply

A 5% near-miss flexibility policy still runs for 2026. In practice that means a mark within five percentage points of the stated requirement is worth applying for. Two limits matter:

Programme-specific extras

Beyond the country table, individual courses can set their own conditions — for example an English score, a test such as GMAT where the discipline expects it, a portfolio, or an interview. The requirements themselves state that the published criteria are standard entry conditions and do not preclude specific programme requirements, and that all applications are assessed on the full submission. Course-level English and test requirements are not in the material we have: check the university's own course pages, which take precedence.

Top-up and part-time routes

Foundation (专升本) applications are considered partly on the college-level (专科) record, but the conditional offer issued will rest mainly on the bachelor's stage. Self-study upgrade programmes are handled case by case; evening and correspondence study (夜大、函授) are not accepted. The material also advises applying to only one programme per faculty.

How to verify each figure

  1. Open the Southampton China entry requirements page for your intake year.
  2. Find your institution in the list and note its tier.
  3. Read across to the degree class you are targeting.
  4. Check your target course page for programme-specific conditions.
  5. Confirm faculty-level exceptions before you rely on the near-miss policy.

All figures above are standard entry criteria only — they do not imply an offer, and the university's own published pages decide.
