The University of Sheffield(谢菲尔德大学)entry requirements for Chinese students (2026) — minimum average mark, university list tiers and programme extras
Your minimum average mark at The University of Sheffield for 2026 entry is set by your undergraduate university's ARWU (ShanghaiRanking) band and the UK degree class you are targeting. A Chinese bachelor's graduate from a 211/985/双一流 institution or an ARWU 1–100 university needs a 70% weighted average for a 2:1 offer and 65% for a 2:2; the requirement rises to 90% / 85% / 80% for universities outside the top 500.
How the weighted average mark is set
Sheffield assesses taught master's applicants on their weighted average mark (加权平均分), not a simple average. The thresholds below are the minimum marks mapped to UK degree classes:
| Your undergraduate university | First Class | 2:1 | 2:2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARWU 1–100, or 211/985/双一流 | 75% | 70% | 65% |
| ARWU 101–300 | 80% | 75% | 70% |
| ARWU 301–500 | 85% | 80% | 75% |
| ARWU 501+ (all Ministry of Education institutions, plus independent/private institutions) | 90% | 85% | 80% |
These are minimum marks from Sheffield's 2026 intake summary. Individual programmes may ask for more, and any requirement not shown here should be confirmed on the university's own pages, which take precedence.
How the university list tiers work
Sheffield uses the ARWU (软科 / ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities) position of your Chinese institution to decide which band applies. The bands are the four ranges above.
The published list names specific institutions with their ARWU rank. For example, Tsinghua University (ARWU 1), Peking University (ARWU 2), Zhejiang University (ARWU 3) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (ARWU 4) sit in the 1–100 band. Some institutions, including arts schools such as the Central Conservatory of Music and Central Academy of Fine Arts, appear in the list with an arts-institution note. The published list is longer than the examples above, so the full, current list — and the exact band for your university — must be checked on the university's own pages, which take precedence.
The exact number of universities in each band is not stated here; it changes with each ARWU release and is maintained by Sheffield.
Bachelor's degree and study-mode rules
Sheffield applies specific rules to how your Chinese bachelor's was earned:
- Your bachelor's must be full-time regular entry (全日制统招). Correspondence, self-study, and part-time routes are not accepted.
- A full-time top-up (3-year diploma plus 1- or 2-year bachelor's) is assessed only on the overseas study component.
- A 4+0 overseas single-certificate programme is assessed against the domestic institution list scores; night-school and online study cannot be recognised.
- A 2+2 or 3+1 dual-certificate route is assessed mainly on overseas performance, but you must hold the domestic dual certificates to apply.
- A 4+0 Sino-foreign dual-certificate route requires both the Chinese and foreign grades to meet the relevant thresholds, and you need the degree from both partners.
- For undergraduate entry, Sheffield does not accept direct entry into Year 3.
Programme-specific extras: GMAT, portfolio, interview
Specific programmes may require a GMAT or GRE score, a portfolio, or an interview. These extras are not listed in the 2026 summary used here, so for any programme you should check the university's own pages, which take precedence.
Where to verify each figure
Every threshold, band, and degree rule above should be confirmed against the official pages before you apply, because Sheffield updates its China requirements per intake. The registered source for this article is the university's own website.
