Lancaster University(兰卡斯特大学)entry requirements for Chinese students — minimum average mark, university list tiers and programme extras

Lancaster University(兰卡斯特大学)states its Chinese entry requirements as a single table for 2026, split by UK degree class and by which band your university sits in on its recognised list. For a taught master's programme at the 2:1 level, the minimum four-year arithmetic average is 0.7 for Band 1 and 0.75 for Band 2. At the 2:2 level it drops to 0.65 and 0.7 respectively. Those four figures are the whole of the stated minimum.

The two thresholds, in one table

UK class equivalent Band 1 Band 2
02:01:00 0.7 0.75
02:02:00 0.65 0.7

The material also says something the table does not: most taught master's programmes require an equivalent to a UK 2:1, with2:2-equivalent entry applying only where a programme states it separately. So the 2:2 row is not a general fallback — check the specific programme page, which takes precedence.

How the band list works

The averages are not the same for everyone. Lancaster reviews your four-year arithmetic average against the band assigned to your university on its own recognised list of Chinese institutions, and that list is organised by province. Some institutions on the list carry a stated province alongside their band, so a wrong or out-of-date match on your part changes which threshold applies to you. Search the list for your own institution by name; the official version of that list is the one that counts.

The material does not publish a headcount per band, and I am not going to estimate one. Nor does it assign a tier to any institution beyond what it lists, so treat any tier claim you encounter elsewhere — including about a named university — as unverified until you find it in Lancaster's own list.

Joint and cooperation institutions

A separate set of entries covers Sino-foreign cooperative and joint institutions, which follow their own awarding-body degrees rather than the mainland weighted average. The stated requirements split by degree type. Hong Kong degrees ask for Honors Bachelor 2:1 or GPA 3.0/4.3 for 2:1-level programmes, and Honors Bachelor 2:2 or GPA 2.5/4.3 for 2:2-level programmes. UK degrees ask for Honors Bachelor 2.1 or 2.2 respectively. Israel degrees ask for 0.8 for the 2:1 level and 0.7 for the 2:2 level. Russia degrees ask for GPA 4.0/5.0 and 3.5/5.0. US degrees ask for GPA 3.2/4.0 and 2.7/4.0.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is listed among these entries as a Hong Kong Degree institution with the 2:1-level requirement of Honors Bachelor 2:1 or GPA 3.0/4.3 — one worked example of how the table reads in practice.

Consistency matters as much as the average

Beyond the number, the material says the four-year record should show reasonable consistency and stability, and that applicants with several weak course results, resits or repeated modules face increased difficulty in the admissions assessment. Passing the arithmetic average is the entry threshold, not a guarantee of an offer — admissions decisions are individual, and no admission outcome is promised here.

Programme-specific extras

Anything beyond the weighted average — test scores, portfolio requirements, interviews, language evidence — is set per programme and is not part of the table above. The material does not enumerate which master's programmes ask for a GMAT or GRE score, require a portfolio, or hold an interview. Go to the individual programme page on lancaster.ac.uk and read its entry requirements section directly, as the university's own pages take precedence over any summary.

Study modes

The2026 requirements are written for master's programmes and do not describe part-time or other non-full-time study modes for Chinese applicants. If you need a part-time option, ask the university directly rather than assuming the same averages apply, and check the university's own pages, which take precedence.

How to verify each figure

  1. Open the country-specific entry requirements page for China on lancaster.ac.uk.
  2. Confirm the intake year shown matches the one you are applying to.
  3. Find your institution in the recognised list and note its band and province.
  4. Read the programme page for extras and any separate 2:2 arrangement.
  5. Contact the admissions office if your institution is missing or your band is unclear.

Every figure above comes from Lancaster's published material for the 2026 intake; anything not stated there, check the university's own pages, which take precedence.
