Computer Science & Information Systems in United Kingdom: All 59 Ranked Universities, QS 2026 Data

The United Kingdom places 59 universities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for Computer Science & Information Systems. That is the second-largest national contingent in a ranking that lists 850 institutions across 79 countries and territories, behind only the United States of America with 106.

For anyone who has already decided to study in the UK and is now choosing a subject, the useful question is not whether the country has a strong presence — it plainly does — but how that presence is layered. Where does the depth sit, how far down does it run, and what does the shape of the list tell you about the choice in front of you?

How deep does the UK's top tier actually go?

The highest-ranked UK entry is the University of Oxford at 4th. Two UK universities sit inside the global top 10, and the overall scores published for those two range from 88.5 to 89.8.

The list widens quickly after that. Four UK institutions are inside the top 20, five inside the top 30, six inside the top 50, and nine inside the top 100. By the top 150 the count reaches 12, and by the top 200 it reaches 21.

Read as a ladder, the pattern is a narrow peak followed by a steady, broad middle. The first ten places hold two UK names; the next ten add two more; the twenty places after that add two more again. Between the top 100 and the top 200, however, the UK adds 12 institutions — more than it placed in the entire top 100. That is where the country's real numerical weight sits.

What the score data can and cannot tell you

QS publishes an overall score for only a leading subset of ranked institutions. In this subject, 21 of the 59 UK entries have a published overall score; the remaining 38 are listed with a rank or a rank band but no score.

Among those 21 scored UK institutions, the distribution is as follows: none score 90 or higher, three score 80 or higher, seven score 70 or higher, and all 21 score 60 or higher. Broken into bands rather than cumulative counts, three fall in the 80–89 band, four in the 70–79 band, and 14 in the 60–69 band.

A missing score carries no meaning about quality. Those 38 institutions are still ranked — they were not dropped, and a blank score does not indicate that they fell below any threshold. It simply means QS did not publish a score for them.

The same caution applies to the score ranges by tier. Inside the top 10, the two scored UK institutions span 88.5 to 89.8. Inside the top 20, the four scored institutions span 78.9 to 89.8. Inside the top 30, five scored institutions span 78.5 to 89.8; inside the top 50, six span 73.6 to 89.8; inside the top 100, nine span 68.9 to 89.8. These ranges describe only the institutions whose scores were published — not every institution in those tiers.

Where the rest of the UK list sits

Below the top 100, the UK's presence is carried largely by institutions ranked in bands rather than at exact positions. The published bands show three UK institutions in the 201–250 band, three in the 251–300 band, four in the 301–350 band, two in the 351–400 band, four in the 401–450 band, three in the 451–500 band, four in the 501–550 band, two in the 551–600 band, four in the 601–650 band, four in the 651–700 band, one in the 701–750 band, and four in the 751–850 band.

One consequence of band-based publishing is that a median rank cannot be calculated for the UK list. The institution sitting at the median position has only a published band — 301–350 — and no exact rank, so no midpoint figure exists. Any statement about the "typical" UK entry in this subject would be guesswork.

The bands also mean that some claims cannot be made cleanly. An institution in the 101–200 band, for instance, cannot be counted inside the top 150, because its range crosses that line; equally, it cannot be described as sitting outside the top 150. Its position is simply not subdivided to that level. The counts above the top 200 — 12 within the top 150 and 21 within the top 200 — reflect only institutions whose band upper bound falls at or inside those cutoffs.

How the UK compares with other countries

The country-level picture puts the UK second globally by number of ranked institutions in this subject. The United States leads with 106. China (Mainland) follows the UK with 57, then India with 44, Germany with 33, France with 31, Italy with 26, Canada with 25, Australia with 24, and Spain with 24.

The gap between the UK and the United States is substantial — 59 against 106. The gap between the UK and China (Mainland) is narrow: two institutions. Below that, the field thins out more noticeably, with India at 44 and then a cluster of European and Anglophone countries in the 24–33 range.

Country/Region Ranked Institutions
United States of America 106
United Kingdom 59
China (Mainland) 57
India 44
Germany 33

Italy 26
Canada 25
Australia 24

What this means for choosing the UK

The shape of the list matters more than the headline count. A country with 59 ranked institutions but only two in the global top 10 and nine in the top 100 offers a particular kind of choice: a small number of internationally dominant names, a solid band of strong performers through the top 200, and then a long tail of institutions whose standing is expressed in broad bands rather than precise positions.

For a student who has already chosen the UK, that structure suggests the decision is less about whether the country can support serious work in computer science — it clearly can, at multiple levels — and more about which layer of the list matches your own profile and goals. The top tier is thin and highly competitive. The middle tier, from roughly the top 100 to the top 200, is where the UK's numbers are thickest, with 12 institutions in the top 150 and 21 in the top 200. Below that, the bands widen and the distinctions between institutions become harder to read from ranking data alone.

Data notes

The figures in this article come from the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), with a data reference date of 2026-04-03. The ranking covers 60 subject tables and includes indicator scores for academic reputation, employer reputation, citations, H-index, and international research network.

The UK counts here are drawn from the full ranked list for Computer Science & Information Systems, filtered by country/region. Institutions whose rank is published as a range rather than an exact position are counted by the upper bound of that range for inclusion in top-N figures; where a range crosses a cutoff, the institution is neither counted inside nor described as outside.

Overall scores are published by QS for only a leading subset of ranked institutions. In this subject, 21 of the 59 UK entries carry a published overall score, and all score-band figures refer only to those 21. The remaining 38 are ranked but unscored, and their absence from score distributions carries no quality implication. No median rank is reported for the UK list, because the institution at the median position has only a published band.

No figures in this article have been calculated, extrapolated, or estimated beyond what the ranking publishes.
