UK Student Visa Financial Proof: Amount Calculation and 28-Day Rule Explained

How Is the Financial Proof Amount Calculated?

When applying for a UK student visa, you must show you have enough money to cover your course fees and living costs. The required amount consists of two parts: the tuition fees for your course and a fixed sum for living expenses.

The tuition fee amount is the total owed to your institution for the entire course, as stated in your offer or CAS. Living costs are calculated based on your study location: if you study in London, you must show £1,334 per month, while if you study elsewhere in the UK, the monthly requirement is £1,023. These living costs are multiplied by the number of months of your course, up to a maximum of 9 months per academic year. So, for example, a 9-month course in London would require living costs of £12,006, plus the tuition fee.

The 28-Day Rule: What You Must Know

Your proof of funds must show that the required amount has been held in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before you submit your visa application. The date on the bank statement or letter should be within 31 days of the date you submit your application. This means you need to plan ahead and keep the money in the account for the full 28-day period.

What to Avoid: Common Mistakes

Many applicants run into issues because they do not understand the exact requirements. A common mistake is not keeping the funds for the full 28 days, or using an account that does not provide a statement that meets the Home Office standards. Another error is miscalculating the living costs, especially confusing the London and non-London rates. Always ensure that the name on the account matches your name, and that the currency is in a format accepted by the Home Office (GBP or a specified currency).

By preparing your finances early and checking the calculation, you can avoid these pitfalls and strengthen your application.
